Abstract Michel de Montaigne (1533–92) is best known for his invention of the essay in its modern form. What is less well recognized is the philosophical significance of the Essays , especially the radical transformation of moral philosophy of which the essay form is the literary expression. Montaigne's project might be described as the emergence of the private, common man out of the hiddenness and shame of privacy, into the light of publicity. This philosophical act announces the coming into being of modern society and a fundamental change in the relationship of the individual to the political realm.
