The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, which \nentitles rural households to 100 days of casual \nemployment on public works at the statutory minimum \nwage, contains special provisions to ensure full \nparticipation of women. This paper, based on fieldwork \nin six states in 2008, examines the socio-economic \nconsequences of the NREGA for women workers. In spite \nof the drawbacks in the implementation of the \nlegislation, significant benefits have already started \naccruing to women through better access to local \nemployment, at minimum wages, with relatively decent \nand safe work conditions. The paper also discusses \nbarriers to women’s participation.
