The Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang

Abstract

This dictionary presents an up-to-date record of modern slang. Drawing on the resources of the Oxford English and illustrated throughout with quotations, this new dictionary covers over 5,000 slang words and phrases that have taken refuge in the English language this century. Including new coinings as well as those that have stood the test of time, the book has slang not only from Britain (wally, prang, and gobsmacked), but also from the rest of the English-speaking world, including America (dork and cockamamie) and Australia (sheila, giggle-house and Jimmy woodser ). This book should appeal to word-lovers, language professionals and general readers. John Ayto is the editor of the Longman Register of New Words and the Bloomsbury Dictionary of Word Origins. John Simpson is the co-editor of Oxford English University and editor of COD Proverbs.
