This chapter considers the contexts of bilingual education in Mexico by presenting three cases. Each case describes a school that belongs to one of the three systems: private Spanish–English bilingual education, public primary with English program, and Indigenous bilingual school. Through these three cases, the chapter discusses the contemporary issues and challenges of bilingual education in Mexico. The types of bilingual education, on one side, reflect the country's close ties to the United States and the perceived need to acquire English as the international language in order to compete in global markets. On the other side, bilingual education in Indigenous communities is an effort to recognize the value of Mexico's ethnolinguistic diversity and the rights of Indigenous peoples to educate their children in their own language, as well as to ameliorate the oppression of colonial policies of eradication of autochthonous languages.
