The Dutch West India Company (WIC) settlements in America, and New Netherland in particular, remained basically terra incognita in its early years for most people in the home country. The Amsterdam emigration program for New Netherland, enhanced by Van der Donck 's convincing images of a land of opportunities, did have its effects. From 1655 onward, during the final decade of New Netherland, significantly more people settled in the colony. The newly inserted elements in Ogilby 's description of New York have perceptibly nothing in common with the themes and tone of the main body based on Montanus. In Daniel Denton 's representation, the Indians, for the first time in the tradition of describing the colony, were marginalized.
