This work analyses the performance of foreing trade in relation to the development process of today's Spanish economy. Firstly it examines trade and the orientation of the trade policy in three main periods: from the Figuerola tariff tothe CivilWard, the two decades of introversion and the liberalization stage from the Stabilization Plan to the incorporation to Europe in 1986. It goes on to analyse how the different stages of development in Spain have had an effect on foreing trade and what has been its role in such process. The use of the Thirlwall model allowsus to see how the Balance of Trade has, in most cases, been a restriction due to the movements of the exports and imports, which has only been overcome in certain occasions thanks to the inflow of invisible items. In this context, the protectionist tendency, characteristic of the Spanish economy, has included a certain component of defensive policy, which has been overcome in the last decades thanks to the impact of developmentin the Balance of Trade and a greater stability of the invisible items.
