This chapter focuses on the sport activities of boys and adolescent males in ancient Greece. In ancient times it was widely believed that a highly organized system of physical education was instituted in Sparta at quite an early date and was based in large part on practices borrowed from Crete. Physical education was believed to have a strongly positive effect on the overall development of young males. The most frequently discussed category of males making use of the gymnasion is that of the epheboi. Some of the young people who received physical education also competed in separate age categories at the highest level of Greek athletic contests, the Panhellenic games. The chapter finally emphasizes on the importance of the distinction between adults and nonadults in Greek society generally.
