This chapter provides a brief theoretical overview of the systems theory framework (STF) and outlines its capacity as a theoretical and practical map or frame of reference for career counselling. The application of the STF to career counselling in particular, the story-telling approach is overviewed and a practical application provided. The STF presents career development as dynamic, depicted through its process influences, recursiveness, change over time and chance. The final process influence, chance, is depicted on the STF as lightning flashes and has increasingly been recognised for its unpredictable but potentially profound influence on career development. Connectedness is an intricate and multidimensional construct. In 1933, Dewey described reflection as a process to 'transform a situation in which there is experienced obscurity, doubt, conflict, disturbance of some sort, into a situation that is clear, coherent, settled, harmonious'; career counselling may provide such a process for clients.
