The institutional and governance crisis of 2001 in Argentina emphasized the limits of the ne-oliberal modelof the nineties and redefi ned the trends for the metropolitan restructuring processes. The economic recoverythat has come in after the end of 2002 brought with it a return to a strengthening of the new upper-middleclass and with it a pattern of territorial auto-segregation similar to that of the nineties (with luxuryresidential skyscrapers in the city and gated communities in the outskirts) these and an on-going growth ofprecarious settlements. This article deals with the main territorial and socioeconomic changes that the foregoinghas given rise to despite that more than a decade and a half of economic growth (1990-2007) that cameto an end with the economic crisis of 1999-2002 in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires. It also seeks tocontribute to the analysis of and debate upon the contradictions of these processes, that show on one handtrends towards a modernization and globalization of certain territorial segments while at the same timeothers that sharpen fragmentation of the metropolitan space and social exclusion.
