This chapter analyzes the role played by overseas aid in education. Taking a postcolonial perspective, it explores overseas aid for the human development of beneficiary countries, given the context of the educational legacies of colonialism, the challenges being raised to these legacies, and the difficulties and ambivalence involved in change. 1 A postcolonial study of Cuban educational aid illustrates the complexities of the manner in which the disengagement from colonial legacies in education is taking place, and facilitates the discussion of alternatives that might become possible if postcolonial societies were able to disentangle themselves from the constraints of their colonial histories.
