Regarding Malaka, the recent archaeological studies state the existence of a Phoenician settlement since, at least, the 7th century B.C. with an origin at the slopes of The “Alcazaba” Fortress’ headland. The fi ndings we are here giving to the light confi rm the existence of a stable settlement that will reach its greater extension from the year 600 B. C. onwards. The construction of a powerful defensive system, together with the outstanding presence of Greek ceramic manufacture, reveal an entirely confi gured city, which exerted as a political and territorial centre of the zone, role which continued in time and, even more, was to be enhanced at Punic times. During the 3rd century B.C., at the time of the Second Punic War, Malaka will still reveal as one of the most important urban sites in the Southern Iberian Peninsula coast, thanks to its strategic situation at the “Gates of the Straits”, and to its privileged accesses to the agricultural and mining regions of the Baetic inlands, circumstances which aroused the interest of the Phoenician settlers in these lands.
