The transportation network in Tunisia. — The trans¬ portation network of Tunisia is inherited from the colonial period and it is more and more convergent towards Tunis ; however it remains incomplete. The railway network is very simple and was built at the beginning of the century. The road network, which was very loose in 1931, is much more densified in the North of the country now and reveales the primacy of Tunis. Changes also may be noted in the geography of harbours : only Tunis-La Goulette has a diversified traffic ; it successfully competes with Bizerte and Sousse. Sfax is threatened by the new harbour of Gabès. Aerial transport development depends on international flows of tourists. Simulation is used to show more exactly and precisely the correlations between transportation networks and urban ones ; it indicates the nodes hierarchy and the poor connexity of the above mentioned networks. The sectorial flows of national interest shows a bad articulation between harbours and railways. Roads are more adapted than railways for both interregional and regional exchanges of goods and travellers. Road network, which is convergent towards Tunis meets better the present condi- tions than the feeding railway network. Private and public road transports for travellers are fundamental in spatial organization. Several levels of transportation networks coexist : basic level with tracks convergent to a «souk » ; regional level (with several stages) ; interregional relations level and hinterland ; national and international level.
