This guide is written for World Bank staff and development practitioners working on infrastructure projects. It is designed to enhance cooperation and further synergies between the World Bank's social development team and colleagues engaged in infrastructure investment operations. The Bank's Sustainable Development Network plays a key role in supporting sustainable infrastructure investments by providing expertise to project task teams working in diverse environments. Activities include investing in infrastructure in post-conflict situations, strengthening local governance to further social inclusion and transparency, involving local people in supply chains and service provision, and much more. The guide highlights the key inputs from social development that can help enhance the quality of infrastructure operations and produce positive development outcomes. It reviews: (1) the main challenges for sustainable infrastructure investments, (2) shows how social development approaches help meet the challenges, (3) highlights social analytic and operational tools relevant to infrastructure operations, and (4) provides operational examples of successful infrastructure and social partnerships at work in Europe and Central Asia.
