The Casa Italiana is a seven-story building in Florentine Renaissance style, facing the original site of the up-town campus of Columbia from across Amsterdam Avenue at 117th Street. With a loggia on the top floor, a proscenium theater with coffered ceiling capable of seating 300, a panelled library with room for about 25,000 books, classrooms and offices, at one time fitted out with monumental Renaissance-type furniture in all public areas, it bears an inscription on its facade taken from Byron's Childe Harold: Italy, Mother of Arts, thy hand was once our guardian and is still our guide. Its cornerstone was laid in August 1926, and the building was inaugurated in 1927 with great fanfare and full press coverage on the anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America.
