ABSTRACT: After showing the reasons for the increasing attention paid by both the literature and policy to the relationship between territory and innovation, this paper reviews the recent debate on the regional innovation system (RIS) concept, on the relation and differences between the RIS and the cluster concepts, on the RIS typologies proposed by the literature, on the findings stemming from the RIS case studies, and on the main results coming from empirical analysis based on secondary sources. Regarding this last point, the review displays the available sources and indicators for regional analysis, the typologies obtained by means of statistical techniques, and the studies that have analyzed the relationship between innovation and economic output and dealt with regional convergence.
