Reference modeling has achieved widespread dissemination in the science as well as the practical realm. There are three major fields of deployment for reference models. First of all reference models have a normative character, representing the state of the art, which can be compared with enterprise specific processes and information models in order to uncover weak points in existing structures. Secondly they can be used as a guideline in selecting suitable standard software. Finally there is the possibility of deducing enterprise specific information models from generic reference models. These enterprise specific models can be used as a basis for the development of individual software. This article contains a working definition for reference models, which is used to deduce requirements for the design of reference models. These requirements are embedded into the structural framework “Guidelines of Modeling” (GoM).
