Abstract

_Lt is always difficult to figure out how best to use pre cious rehearsal t i m e. H o w m u c h effort shou ld be spent on scales? O n drills? O n chorales? And only at long last do we finally get a round to asking, " H o w about the music?" Most instrumental ensemble directors feel that the ability to read music is a primary goal. After all, the better the ensemble members read, the quicker we can get beyond the notes to the music. Playing from music notat ion is a critically impor tant objective of ensemble programs that has been formally suggested for decades
