Ethnology of the Mayas of southern and central British Honduras

Abstract

Father Allen A. Stevenson placed his very considerable knowledge of the Mayas, gained in the course of his many years' work as a mis- sionary among them, at my disposal. He was able to aid considerably in clearing up several doubtful points.Father Stevenson is one of the few residents in the colony who have the interest and welfare of the Indian at heart. At Field Museum Dr. Paul C. Standley, Associate Curator of the Herbarium, kindly aided in identifying a number of the plants used by the Indians. It would be unfair to pass by without mention the numerous Maya friends without whose information this publi- cation would not have been possible. The chief of these are Agustin Hob, Faustino Bol, Cecilio Cal, and Tomas Chun of San Antonio, and Jacinto Cunil and Juan Cocom of Socotz. The ethnological material gathered is somewhat meager.Had the work been initiated twenty years earlier, much fuller results would have been obtained.A few embers of the fire of Maya culture still continue to glow dimly. It has been my aim to gather these isolated sparks before all is trampled out by the onward rush of what we, in our insularity, call progress.
