In social sciences, the main interest of research often lies in the quantitative expression of relationships between latent variables that represent (psychological or sociological) constructs. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is suitable for inference and description of these relationships (Bentler, 1983; Bentler and Weeks, 1980). As an important extension of Spearman’s early ideas on factor analysis (Bartholomew, 2007), and built especially upon the many early contributions of Jo¨reskog (1977), today SEM includes a variety of statistical models that are highly relevant to psychological research (Bartholomew et al., 2011; Lubke, 2010; Lee, 2007; Yuan and Bentler, 2007; Bollen and Curran, 2006; Bauer and Curran, 2004; Bollen, 2002). It is well known that SEM is frequently applied in the psychological (MacCallum and Austin, 2000) and related sciences (Hays et al., 2005), but it also is becoming a useful methodology in many other fields. Gates et al. (2011), Aburatani (2011), Mulaik (2009), and Grace (2006) provide a general overview of the literature.
