Abstract

ABSTRACT: The crisis of the Roman State affected the commercial networks, which brought about a weakening of the urban system, the axis of settlement along the coast of Granada, in the South of Spain. Thus, from the 6th century the settlement pattern moved to the mountains, where some small habitats with an agricultural basis emerged, whose origin was perhaps Pre-Roman, although the settlement based on cities and «villae» persisted. The social base were free and autonomous communities. The slow process of consolidation of the Islamic State culminated in the 10th century in the revitalization of the cities, centers of the new power, and the abandoning of the majority of the mountain settlements in favour of others on plains with better conditions for agriculture.
