This paper investigates the relationship between motorization and the growth of cities, and the related impact of transportation infrastructure development on displacement of the poor in urban areas. Transportation growth dynamics in urban areas that have high population densities and high poverty levels are examined. The author highlights several examples of successful urban transportation initiatives in the developing world that increase accessibility for the poor, including a cable car system in Caracas, Venezuela that runs through urban slums and a rapid bus transit corridor in Curitiba, Brazil. The author concludes that equitable management of the spatial dimensions of cities and urban growth can positively impact income disparity dynamics. Affordable, safe and clean transportation is critical to reducing poverty and creating sustainable economic growth in urban areas.
