This chapter examines the modernisation of concert life in London and its rapid transformation around the turn of the century, resulting in a ‘crisis of overproduction’. Crucial to this transformation were the emergence of the West End as a shopping centre due to consumerism and the improved transport to and from the suburbs. The chapter also looks at the close involvement of publishers of sheet music and manufacturers of musical instruments in the construction, ownership, management and repertory of concert halls. Concerts were sponsored by firms such as Chappell and Bechstein that became the forerunners of today's big corporations.
