This dissertation has the objective of discussing some existing relations between the work and the quality of life of elderlies. It is hypothesized that the work can increase the quality of life (by giving the elderly physical and intellectual activities) but can also worsen it (if the work environment is degrading and stressing, the quality of the worker in the third age may decrease). In this sense, this study emphasizes the importance of developing studies and researches that deal with the situation of the elderly in Brazil; the considerations about the expression “quality of life”; and the work relations evolution. All these issues were mentioned in interviews with conducted in 10 male retired workers, with age varying from 60 to 89 years. The field work showed some inter-relations among these three themes (work, quality of life and aging), as well as the following questions: the importance of work in one’s life, as a center issue the pleasure and displeasure provided by the work, the retirement, and the relations between health and work. Finally, this dissertation concludes that the work can be an important element to increase one’s quality of life, if it is related to pleasure. It also discuss other three possible elements which may increase the quality of life in the elderly: the groups that are looking for the well-being of the elderly, the program preparation for retirement and the future projects for life.
