New World Depopulation and the Case of Disease

Abstract

The general problem of indigenous demographic decline in the New World after conquest is briefly reviewed, with emphasis on contributing factors. The impact of epidemic diseases is evaluated and a methodology offered which blends ethnohistorical accounts with medical information and data from analogous outbreaks. The Andean area is the focal point, smallpox the test case.
