Although much is said about samba’s rhythms, there are still few sources that help disclosing their mysteries. Ethnographic research and music analysis based on African musicological theories have uncovered many facets of rhythmic concepts underlying the samba de roda from Reconcavo da Bahia. This paper intends to present such facets while explaining African rhythmic concepts still little explored in Brazil. The dissemination of African theories may bring new light into Brazilian ethnomusicology, by proposing another view about structuring processes of musical phenomena other than the European. The analysis of Samba de Roda showed the presence of rhythmic principles, such as elementary pulses, beats, time-line-patterns and cyclic forms, in its percussion instruments, plucked string instruments – already discussed in another paper –, as well as in its singing and dance. In this way, African musical principles prove to be more than mere cultural influences, working as temporal organizers of the whole musical performance and requiring their analysis for understanding Afro-Brazilian musical traditions.
