Recent research on parental mediation has indicated mixed relationships with demographic and attitudinal factors. Building on critiques of demographic predictors, this study tests the concept of parental involvement. Our results confirm 3 distinct mediation strategies (coviewing, restrictive mediation, and instructive mediation) and suggest that their connections are better explained not only by parents' concerns about television, but also by their involvement with children. Mediation may be dependent upon parents' accessibility to children and parent-child engagement in certain types of shared activities. Future work to develop parental involvement as a contributing factor in this process is warranted.
