A great many varieties of vitreous materials were discovered in the Ancient Near East even before the first millennium B.c. Although most of these vitreous objects are in a bad state of preservation, several types can be discerned without recourse to spectographic and other analyses which will eventually refine our understanding of these materials. Here, some of the more important stages of these developments ‐ the inventions of glaze, glazed pottery, glass‐making and polychromy ‐ are briefly discussed with reference to the techniques involved and their relationships with established traditions of working in vitreous materials in general. A concluding section deals with some implications of the history of these advances, and includes distinctions to be made in considering prehistoric and historic innovations.
