Protection of Lignocellulosic and Cellulosic Paper by Deacidification with Dispersions of Micro- and Nano-particles of Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2 in Alcohols

Abstract

SUMMARIES Five different dispersions of Ca(OH) 2 or Mg(OH) 2 nanoparticles in alcohols were applied as deacidification to both lignocellulosic and purely cellulosic paper samples. Artificial ageing tests at constant elevated temperature (90°C) and relative humidity fluctuating between 40% and 60% every 24 hours were performed to investigate the effect of the deacidification treatment. The unaged and preaged paper sheets were immersed into the deacidification dispersions to examine whether deacidification with alkaline earth hydroxide nanoparticles in alcohols are effective in retarding paper deterioration. Protective effects of deacidification with nanoparticles could only be achieved with preaged paper samples. For unaged paper, the application of this deacidification procedure is not advisable as a preventive treatment. This is probably due high pH of the Ca(OH) 2 or Mg(OH) 2 nanoparticles deposited in the paper matrix which might cause alkaline hydrolysis of cellulose, resulting in a substantial decrease of its DP. L'étude porte sur l'efficacité de Ca(OH) 2 et de Mg(OH) 2 , présents sous forme de dispersion dans divers alcools, cette efficacité s'applique à la désacidification de papiers, vieillis et non vieillis, provenant de pâte mécanique et de pâte cellulose. Pour ce traitement on procède à une simulation par immersion dans la dispersion. Afin de pouvoir faire des estimations sur un éventuel effet préventif du traitement de papiers non vieillis en comparaison à des échantillons de papiers vieillis prématurement, on maintient une partie du matériel soumis aux tests à une température constante de 90 C alors qu'on expose une autre partie à l'humidité, le taux d'humidité alternant toutes les 24 heures et passant de 40 à 60% , on crée ainsi une phase de vieillissement artificiel précèdant le traitement. On a constaté un effet positif de désacidification par nanoparticules uniquement sur les échantillons de papiers préalablement vieillis. Par contre, ce procédé n'est pas à recommander sur du papier non vieilli, ceci sans doute en raison du fort degré pH en Ca(OH) 2 ou Mg(OH) 2 des nanoparticules de la matrice à papier susceptibles de déclencher une baisse substantielle du degré de polymérisation de la cellulose. Die Wirksamkeit von Ca(OH) 2 und Mg(OH) 2 , die in verschiedenen Alkoholen als Nanopartikel dispergiert vorliegen, wird bezüglich ihrer Entsäuerungswirkung an ungealterten und gealterten Holzschliff- und Zellstoffpapieren untersucht. Die Behandlung wird durch Immersion der Papierproben in die Dispersion simuliert. Um Einschätzungen einer möglichen präventiven Wirkung der Behandlung von ungealterten Papieren im Vergleich zu vorgealterten Papierproben zu ermöglichen, wird ein Teil des Probematerials bei einer konstanten Temperatur von 90°C und einer im 24-Stunden Zyklus zwischen 40% und 60% wechselnden relativen Feuchte künstlich gealtert und anschließend behandelt. Eine positive Wirkung der Entsäuerung mit Nanopartikeln ließ sich nur für die vorgealterten Papierproben nachweisen. Für ungealterte Papiere kann das Verfahren hingegen nicht empfohlen werden, da vermutlich durch den hohen pH der in die Papiermatrix eingebrachten Calcium- bzw. Magnesiumhydroxid-Partikel eine substanzielle Verringerung des Polymersiationsgrads der Cellulose verursacht wird.
