This essay interrogates the production of gender on the early modern English stage by considering what is at stake in the various (de)constructions of gender that occur in Ben Jonson's Jacobean city comedies Epicoene, or The Silent Woman, The Alchemist, and Bartholmew Fair. After analysing some contemporary medical constructions of hermaphrodism, the essay turns to the curious early modern preoccupation with transvestism and its implications about performances of masculinity and femininity.
