This book is a collection of 16 studies which examine aspects of the impact of European colonization on the demography of sub-Saharan Africa. contributors not only examine the effects of slavery colonialism and capitalism on these societies but also the mark the resistance and resilience of many African institutions and individuals. As they outline the past and present diversity of African population dynamics the contributors illuminate the ongoing process of economic and political change. Changes in settlement patterns labor migration and marriage and household structure as well as the impact of health on fertility and mortality rates form the major demographic themes of this volume. The case studies cover twenty African societies representing each of the major regions of sub-Saharan Africa. The population issues emerge not as external or internal variables but as part of a dynamic system that the editors characterize as a demographic regime. (EXCERPT)
