To what extent are ‘local ladders’ to political representation available to the ethnic minority population of England and Wales? Do we see a greater ethnic diversity amongst local elected representatives than we do amongst national politicians? By answering these questions we can attempt to assess the responsiveness of existing political institutions to the needs of contemporary multi‐racial society. This article assesses the extent of Asian and Afro‐Caribbean local representation and breaks down the figures by type of authority, gender of councillors, and political party represented. Also, given higher levels of Asian political participation do we see more Asian local councillors? The article also discusses the relevance of local politics to racial inequality in contemporary Britain and examines some of the factors that may hinder aspiring local politicians of Asian or Afro‐Caribbean background.
