Abstract

Creative writing instructors often overlook research as a specific and explicit classroom lesson. This essay details the various types of creative research, differentiating between ‘experiential’ and ‘traditional’ creative research methods. The essay then offers a characterisation exercise as a way to usefully integrate these methods into the introductory creative writing classroom, providing an example easily modifiable to various texts and genres.
