The MS. 3142 of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal (dated 1285-1292) is certainly among the richest works of an artist active until approximately 1300 and known for having contributed to the elaboration of a collection of literary manuscripts in French and some didactic, scientific and religious works in Latin. This important compilation of vernacular poetic texts and romances constitutes a very consistent gathering of works related to the milieu of literary activity and patronage of Northern France ; but it is also of a major interest for the understanding of the literary history of its time. The analysis of its content and the study of its material production reveals a very specific organisation based on a combination of physically independent sections. This is indeed a coherent juxtaposition and the classification which underlines it turns out to be highly valuable for the evaluation of the various literary genres and the way they can interact with each other. The perfection of its structural, narrative and iconographie trend not only informs us about the emerging poetical issues of thirteenth century French literature but also emphasizes a new perception and conscience of the authorship and its often ambiguous position toward the political forces to which it is subjected.
