Mapping science: in memory of John Ziman

Abstract

Some time between twenty and thirty years ago, I became aware of a friendly hand waving from the far side of the river that I had, for some time, been feebly trying to bridge. It was the river that was then supposed to divide the ‘two cultures’, and people who tried to bridge it tended to be shot at from both ends, rather than being welcomed. I was familiar by then with the embattled forces on my own side, in the humanities and social sciences. I more or less understood them. But much of the further bank was still a mystery to me, and especially I knew little about its most sharply defended citadel, physics.
