Abstract

This article is in three parts: in the first part I attempt to reveal the highly organized narrative structure of the novella; in the second part I try to show how the basil image functions both in relation to the interior economy of the tale and in relation to the technique of thematic linkage between the various stories of Day Four. Finally, in the third part, I assess how far such functional and structural analysis may justify a change in our assumptions about the novella.
