THERE ARE two forms of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (2), one to be administered to groups and one to be given individually. The group form is a booklet containing 550 different items. The individual marks his answers (true, false, or cannot say) on a sep arate answer sheet. In the other form of the test, the individual sorts 550 cards into three categories (true, false, or cannot say). These 550 items are the same in both forms, in the group form, 16 items are repeated. The statements always appear in the same order i n the group form, while in the individual form, the sequence varies as the 550 cards are re-shuffled after each individual administration. The purpose of this study is to compare these two forms of the MM PI in order to determine the extent to which they are equivalent. The sample studied is 100 freshmen males who took the group form of the MMPI as part of the regular testing program for entering fresh men at the University of Wisconsin, September 15, 1948. As clients of the Student Counseling Center, University of Wisconsin, they later took the individual (card sorting) form of the MMPI. The time inter val between the administration of both forms ranged from 3 days to 178 days. Wiener (3) has published similar research. He compared the two forms of the MMPI for 200 male veterans who had been given the in dividual and group forms in exact alternation over a five-week period until one hundred had taken each form. He did not find any differences even approaching statistical significance between the two forms on any scale of the MMPI. The Cannot Say scale was not studied. Since in Wiener's study each individual only took one form of the MMPI, the question of the equivalence of the two forms for the same individual was not answered. This study is a further attempt to show the relationship of the two forms of the MMPI by another approach. In this study, correlations between the two forms on 13 scales were computed. All were significant at the 1% level. These results are
