Although the influence of the 16th-century Netherlandish rederijkers (rhetoricians) on the artists of the period has long been acknowledged, the traditionally close relationship between the two groups has not been sufficiently appreciated. In Antwerp, one rederijker chamber was merged completely with the artists' guild. Elsewhere, artists were often active rederijkers, even composing plays and poems of their own. The effect of rederijker imagery can be discerned in the allegorical subjects treated by the artists who, in turn, occasionally inspired their literary colleagues. Bruegel was especially influenced by the rederijkers and the meaning of several of his works can be clarified by reference to their plays and pageants.
