Abstract

Summary This paper describes two inter-related surveys carried out between 1991 and 1993, covering the entire College and University library holdings of the University of Oxford. The first summary was a fact-finding exercise, concentrating on environmental conditions, conservation and preservation policies and quantification of the collections. The second survey used the quantification data amassed in the first survey as the basis for the physical assessment of the collections. The statistical basis of the second survey is described in detail together with the method of applying the sampling technique to the collections.
