The pictorial art work of 13‐year‐old children, done as part of their routine school assignment, was assessed by three experienced art teachers on each of six aspects of artistic performance (colour, space, pattern, imagery, affect and composition). The personality dimensions of introversion‐extroversion and field‐dependence‐independence of the children were also measured and the subjects grouped into three levels of each, giving nine groups. A significant interaction (P#lt0.05) was found between field‐independence, extroversion and art measure in their effect on art performance. Basically, scores improved with increasing field‐independence most greatly on imagery for introverts, on pattern and colour for ambiverts, and on space, composition and affect for extroverts. The results were discussed in terms of the mechanisms underlying the two personality measures.
