The latest generation of British New Towns. During the last ten years, Britain has witnessed the creation of a series of thirteen New Towns. Some of these are true green field developments (Livingston, Milton Keynes), but most are extensions of existing towns (Warrington, Runcorn, Peterborough). The aim of the article is to point out the general specific characteristics of this new generation. Analysis is made turn of the organisation of residential space, the two types of Master Plan — grid and linear — and of the traffic system. Particular attention is paid to environment, the integration of existing development, and the planning of Town Centres. In his conclusion, the author poses the problems of finance, of socio-professional vanety and of the subregional role played by these New Towns.
