The challenge to raise practice standards in investigative and post-investigative child protection work may be met by greater opportunities for practice consultation. This qualitative study, based in social services departments in London, used the Focus Group method to explore how child protection consultation was provided internally in pressurised social services departments. The study examines when and where case-based consultation took place and highlights the obstacles to safeguarding consultation opportunities. The paper argues for the further development of consultant posts, which are relatively new, paying special attention to their status and location in the organisation, the consultants' training needs and the assessment of consultation skills.
