Fig. 1 The N02 concentrations at Art Gallery A in Tokyo, July 1986 June 1987, measured outdoors (--), at the reception desk (_._._), in an exhibition room (-----), in a showcase ( ), and in a depository (_ .._00_). c a 3 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 3.1 N02 concentration in the museum environment Figure 1 shows N02 concentration at Art Gallery A beside a heavy traffic freeway in Tokyo. The outdoor N02 concentration was found to range between around 40 to 70ppb which is very high compared with the 30ppb annual average concentration in the Tokyo metropolitan area. There is a trend showing that the concentration is higher in winter than in summer because atmospheric conditions are more stable in winter in Tokyo. The concentration at the reception desk seemed to be almost half of the outdoor one. It is thought, therefore, that the atmosphere is obviously polluted by the outdoor air because the desk is located near the entrance of the Art Gallery. However, the concentrations in the exhibition room and the showcase were greatly reduced, at a level less than 10ppb. In addition, the levels were found to be constant through the year. A depository of the Art Gallery is independently air-conditioned with a charcoal filter. There the concentration was kept at a very low level of a few ppb. The above results show that the air-conditioning, especially with a charcoal filter, is very effective in controlling N02 concentration. for colour change examinations after exposure for 3, 6 and 12 months.
