The aim of this study is twofold; firstly, to discuss all known maps relevant to Southern Ontario, and specifically to Huronia in northern Simcoe County, between the years 1615 and 1660; and secondly, to use these maps and other primary source material to reconstruct the distribution of Indian villages and Catholic missions as they were in Huronia during the first half of the 17th century. All previous attempts at such a study have been based on only one of four known contemporary maps of Huronia. Because the three additional maps furnish a considerable amount of new information, the study presented here differs radically in some ways from accepted theory. It is hoped that this study will provoke discussion in order to further our knowledge of the historical geography of 17th century Ontario.
