A first part of this paper proposes a conceptual analysis of the private/public dichotomy. The rise in private security's staff and budget opens the way for a new deal in the field of security, the lion's share being handed out to the private sector. In the second part, theoretical criticism limits the range of the above statement. Nevertheless, even if the privatization of social control does not constitute a change of paradigm, it still bears numerous consequences pertaining to the criminal justice system. Finally, taking into account all aspects of private security - its technological dimensions in particular - should lead us to acknowledge not only a multiplication and a dispersal of the agents of social control, but a redefinition of its operation as risk management.
