This paper deals with the way ethnohistoric models can be used as a framework for organizing archaeological data, and in turn how archaeology can be used to verify or correct ethnohistoric data. Sixteenth‐century descriptions of Zapotee and Maya religion are compared to data derived from the archaeological record from the same two regions. Finally, Zapotee and Maya religion are compared to see what basic patterns they might share.
