This paper examines the potential of information technology (IT) for Nongovernmental Organisations (NGOs) as a networking and information sharing tool. The advances in communication technology offers the potential to make IT cheaper and more accessible to all. The paper explores the limitations of both the technology and the capacity of NGOs to use it for networking. It examines how and why IT is being implemented, what are the costs (economic, social, political and cultural), what are the impacts, who will pay and who will benefit. Hindrances include cost, access, dependency, illiteracy, lack of commitment and an economic and political environment not conducive to the development of IT networks.
