As a theorist who teaches acting, and a practitioner who teaches theory, I cannot separate one from the other. My research and practice are interdisciplinary as well as intercultural. Issues of performance theory and methodology are generated from the particulars of the moment, whether in Kerala, South India, where I have researched and trained in performing and martial arts; in New Glarus, Wisconsin, where I have participated in and researched annual community performances of Schiller's Wilhelm Tell; or when teaching and directing performers. At each of these sites I try to find productive ways of allowing theoryfes] and practice[s] to inform each other for students, colleagues, and/or audiences. Since I work between theories, practices, and cultures, I argue here for replacing the (false) dichotomies we too often create between theory and practice, doing and thinking, the profession and the academy, with a potentially more productive dialogic relationship that equally appreciates doing and thinking-about-doing in an increasingly pluralistic, multiand intercultural world.
