In this study, we investigate the relation between personality traits and cross-cultural adjustment using international military officers participating in a 1 year military training program in the United States. Unlike previous research, we used an instrument designed to measure a universal representation of trait structures: the 5-Factor Model of personality (Costa & McCrae, 1992 Costa, P. T., & McCrae, R. R. (1992). Normal personality assessment in clinical practice: The NEO Personality Inventory. Psychological Assessment, 4, 5–13.[Crossref] , [Google Scholar]). The U-Curve Model (Lysgaard, 1955 Lysgaard, S. (1955). Adjustment in a foreign society: Norwegian Fulbright grantees visiting the United States. International Social Sciences Bulletin, 7, 45–51. [Google Scholar]) of cross-cultural adjustment is also opposed in this study against the Business Sojourner Model (Furnham & Bochner, 1986 Furnham, A., & Bochner, S. (1986). Culture shock. New York: Methuan. [Google Scholar]). Results fail to support the U-Curve Model and provide some support for the influence of personality traits. Moreover, results clearly support an understanding of the cross-cultural adjustment of international military officers in the United States within the framework of Business Sojourner Model.
