The notion that Fernando I of León-Castilla (r. 1037–65) made an annual donation to the monastery of Cluny has been accepted as fact by medieval and modern historians. This study intends to challenge that notion, based on the lack, during Fernando's lifetime, of any evidence for such a donation, and the absence of any sign of Cluniac influence within the kingdom. Rather, we should see the story of the donation as a forgery perpetrated during the reign of his son, Alfonso VI (r. 1065–1109), at a time when we see economic, political, and religious connections between the kingdom of León-Castilla and the monastery of Cluny, as well as liturgical influences of Cluny on the kingdom in which we see the hand of Alfonso's sister, Urraca Fernández.
