Ancestral Western Pueblo is now the fashionable term used to refer to late prehistoric communities in eastern Arizona and western New Mexico. Although there is no question that the occupants of these communities were the ancestors of modern Pueblo groups, use of this terminology seems to generalize the Puebloan past by overlooking the social processes responsible for community demographics in the late prehistoric Pueblo period. Through an examination of key architectural characteristics from several large excavated sites located in east-central Arizona, an argument is forwarded for the retention of the term Mogollon Pueblo to refer to these large pueblos.
